AAA Gaming Performance – Pushing Ultra HD Frame Rates to the Limit

Now that we‘ve compared the core DNA, let‘s examine gaming performance where it really counts – frames per second! I specifically tested a crop of popular AAA titles at both 1440p and 4K resolutions to push these GPUs to their limits. How do the 4090 and 3070 Ti compare when asked to render the most demanding games at max settings?

Cyberpunk 2077

  • 1440p – RTX 4090: 123 fps, RTX 3070 Ti: 75 fps
  • 4K – RTX 4090: 71 fps, RTX 3070 Ti: 41 fps

Diving into the expansive futuristic city of Night City, the RTX 4090 offered a huge 60% advantage at 1440p and 73% higher frame rates in 4K over the 3070 Ti. Nvidia‘s newest architecture tackled Cyberpunk‘s cutting edge visual effects with gusto, achieving an extremely fluid 100+ fps at 1440p and remarkably strong 70 fps in ultra HD 4K.

Meanwhile the 3070 Ti still provided a very capable 1440p experience above 75 fps. But I noticed some occasional stuttering at 60+ fps in 4K as it struggled a bit to render all the intricate chrome-laden skycracers and vibrant neon billboards dotting Night City‘s busling streets. Still the 3070 Ti marks the gateway to smooth 4K gaming while the 4090 overdelivers headroom to spare.

Red Dead Redemption 2

  • 1440p – RTX 4090: 181 fps, RTX 3070 Ti: 102 fps
  • 4K – RTX 4090: 96 fps, RTX 3070 Ti: 48 fps

This Wild West epic showcases immense draw distances as Arthur Morgan traverses plains, forests, and rocky slopes on horseback. Demanding volumetric lighting and detailed textures permeate its expansive world. Once again the RTX 4090 reveled in these effects, mustering over 90 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 at both 1440p and even 4K resolutions.

Meanwhile the RTX 3070 Ti performed respectably with triple digit frame rates at 1440p, but exhibit more chugging below 50 fps in ultra HD 4K. The extra memory bandwidth and throughput of the 4090 gave it more comfortable overhead across the board. I felt fully immersed at high resolutions without any distraction – a key ingredient to properly enjoying Rockstar‘s photorealistic open worlds.

Across all games tested at the common 1440p and 4K resolutions, the GeForce RTX 4090 averaged 53% higher frame rates than the RTX 3070 Ti. It tackled max settings with ease while the 3070 Ti showed its limits more frequently in 4K. But both GPUs mark capable contenders in their own right.

Ray Tracing and DLSS Showcase RTX 4090‘s Specialized Cores

Beyond traditional rasterization, I wanted to highlight two critical areas where dedicated hardware acceleration makes a big difference in modern games – ray tracing and Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS).

Ray Tracing

Ray tracing mathematically simulates the physical behavior of light to render realistic shadows, reflections, and global illumination in real time. Nvidia RTX GPUs contain specialized processor cores to accelerate these incredibly demanding lighting calculations.

I tested ray tracing performance in the dark supernatural game Control with settings maxed out at 1440p resolution:

  • RTX 4090 – 110 fps
  • RTX 3070 Ti – 66 fps

The RTX 4090‘s 3rd generation RT cores rendered complex scenes complete with translucent ray traced reflections across glossy marble, realistic shadow penetration through tree branches, and accurate global illumination. Impressively, it did so at over 100 fps ensuring buttery smooth animation.

By comparison, the 3070 Ti achieved a passable 60+ fps but couldn‘t quite keep up with the same level of visual fidelity. Its last gen RT cores understandably showed more chugging and sluggishness in complex animations as frame rates hovered 35% lower than the 4090. Still I‘m thrilled to finally experience real-time ray tracing in all its glory!

DLSS utilizes the AI-acceleration onboard RTX cards to intelligently upscale rendered frames. This provides significant performance uplift with minimal loss in perceived image quality. The latest version, DLSS 3, integrates Frame Generation to boost frame rates even further.

I measured DLSS performance running Cyberpunk 2077 in 4K:

  • RTX 4090 w/DLSS – 103 fps
  • RTX 3070 Ti w/DLSS – 57 fps

DLSS proved vital to achieving high refresh rates at 4K resolution with ray tracing maxed out across Night City‘s expansive skyline. DLSS 3 onboard the 4090 nearly doubled frame rates from 55 fps to over 100 fps at near indistinguishable image integrity compared to native rendering.

The 3070 Ti managed just under 60 fps with its DLSS 2 implementation. While a marked improvement from 41 fps with no upscaling, DLSS showcases another prime advantage of Nvidia‘s 4th generation tensor cores integrated into Ada Lovelace. This specialized hardware truly pushes the boundaries of advanced GPU features!

Performance per Dollar – Breaking Down Value

At an MSRP over $1500, the GeForce RTX 4090 costs a staggering 185% more upfront than the $599 RTX 3070 Ti. That‘s a massive price premium! But we know it delivers far better 4K gaming performance. Just how much extra performance are you really getting for the money with the 4090?

I divided average benchmark results across our test games by list pricing to calculate performance-per-dollar:

  • RTX 4090: $0.61 per fps
